Le concept de stratégies du traduire, si largement employé, est confus, ce que montrent aussi bien les définitions courantes que l’usage qu’en font des spécialistes, y compris les plus renommés. L’auteur postule un retour aux sources nécessaire, et une nouvelle mise au point du problème. Une stratégie ne peut être que consciente et globale. Pas de choix conscient, pas de stratégie, donc, et c’est ce que la pratique démontre : l’écriture de la traduction est considérée souvent peu systématique, et pour cause. En fait, en ce qui a trait aux choix stratégiques, à côté de quelques facteurs conscients, il existe autant de facteurs de choix subconscients, qui interfèrent avec ceux-là. Le résultat est un amalgame qui altère une vision stratégique du traduire, à un degré variable, toujours à définir dans un cas précis. Le niveau stratégique reste en lien assez étroit avec un niveau subordonné, celui des « techniques de traduction », qui coincident assez souvent avec les « universaux du traduire », parmi lesquels se trouvent de nombreuses « figures de traduction ». Tout changement au niveau du message original opéré dans la traduction n’est pas figure toutefois. L’usage de la notion de figure ne paraît justifié que là où nous sommes capables de définir la nature et les conséquences du changement, ou autrement dit, sa valeur fonctionnelle.
