Abstract
The London fragments of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia begin with an account of how Demaenetus, an Athenian, stole a trireme from the Piraeus and used it to sail to Cyprus to join up with the Persian navy led by the exiled Athenian commander, Conon. The historian links this action with other evidence for increasing dissatisfaction with the Spartans in Athens and other poleis in the early 390s bc . Xenophon, whose Hellenica also covers this time period, does not mention the incident at all. This paper explores what Demaenetus’ act might have meant, why the Oxyrhynchus historian includes it and why Xenophon does not. Les fragments de Londres des Helléniques d’Oxyrhynchos commencent avec le compte rendu du vol, par l’athénien Demaenetus, d’une trirème qu’il fit traverser du Pirée à Chypre pour rejoindre la flotte perse commandée par l’Athénien exilé Conon. L’historien rapproche cet épisode d’autres témoignages du mécon-tentement grandissant exprimé à Athènes et ailleurs face aux Spartiates au début des années 390 bc . Cet événement, toutefois, est passé sous silence par Xénophon qui, pourtant, couvre la même période dans ses Helléniques . La présente étude s’interroge sur la signification du geste de Demaenetos et sur les motivations qui ont conduit l’auteur des Helléniques d’Oxyrhynchos à lui donner une place dans son récit, et sur celles de Xénophon à l’ignorer.
