Line Shapes in Brillouin Spectroscopy : the “platelet” Scattering Geometry

Abstract
When performing Brillouin light‐scattering experiments with either a right‐angle or back‐scattering geometry the spectral profiles for the Stokes and Antistokes components remain symmetrical for all collection cones of practical significance. Signal can consequently be enhanced by using a large‐angle collection cone without significant consequences for the accuracy of the measured frequency shift. This is not the case for the so‐called platelet scattering geometry which is sometimes preferred in part because the refractive index of the scattering medium is thereby eliminated from the frequency shift determination. Caution must be exercised in particular for materials with high refractive index. An example is presented and discussed for the case of optically transparent silicon carbide with a refractive index of 2.7.
