Water Management and Mass Transport Studies in Free Convection Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract
This investigation addresses water management and mass transport phenomena for low temperature (<40{degree sign}C), free convection PEM fuel cells that have been studied using novel microfabricated structures. Tailored mass transfer media (TMTM) were fabricated using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) techniques applied to low resistivity silicon. These structures were tailored with discrete wetting/non-wetting features to effectively manage liquid water distribution within the cell and simultaneously provide unobstructed gas transport to/from the catalyst layer. The TMTM were based on a micromachined hydrophobic silicon mesh comprised of 140μm square pores with discrete sets of zones engineered to be hydrophilic using a carbon-polyethylene oxide treatment. These structures were tested with and without treatments in a single-cell test fixture for temperature from 25{degree sign} to 40{degree sign}C operating on ambient air. For all test conditions, the treated versus untreated structure performance showed limiting current increases that ranged from 32% to 88%.
