O livro de Luís Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira reúne diversos trabalhos elaborados pelo autor a partir de suas pesquisas no Brasil, em Quebec e nos Estados Unidos.Numa perspectiva comparativa, ele toma por objeto as dificuldades da cidadania democrática, abordando de maneira original a questão das relações entre a proteção jurídica, as demandas por reconhecimento e o desrespeito à consideração devida a um indivíduo ou a um grupo.Por mais diferentes que sejam essas três sociedades, o autor demonstra que em nenhuma delas o direito permite trazer uma solução satisfatória à recusa de reconhecimento nas interações sociais habituais.No âmbito de um raciocínio que se insere na continuidade do pensamento de Roberto DaMatta, o autor chama a atenção para o fato de que, no Brasil, a preocupação com a manifestação de consideração à pessoa do interlocutor lesa os outros cidadãos, quando esse comportamento se traduz na concessão de um privilégio.A partir de uma etnografia particularmente voltada para conflitos encaminhados a um juizado de pequenas causas em Cambridge (Massachusetts, EUA), onde trabalhou como voluntário num serviço de aconselhamento paralegal, o autor observa, inversamente, a grande dificuldade das partes envolvidas em compreender o quanto a consideração é necessária para a qualidade da vida social e o quanto pode ser considerada, nesse caso, como uma "obrigação (ético-moral)".
