Résumé L’histoire du métissage aux États-Unis est liée aux lois promulguées contre le mélange ethnique. Ces législations avaient pour objectifs de limiter au maximum les couples inter-ethniques afin d’éviter l’avènement d’enfants métis, enfants dont le puritanisme religieux et les préjugés raciaux de la population blanche ne pouvaient ni tolérer ni ne voulaient reconnaître. Toutefois, les différentes mesures restrictives n’ont pas pu, bien entendu, complétement empêchées ces couples supra de se former ni l’arrivée d’enfants issus de ces unions. Quand est-il alors du fameux « Melting Pot », l’un des mythes fondateurs états-uniens ? Il ne faut pas confondre le mythe du « Melting Pot » avec le métissage. Le premier se réfère à l’absorption de groupes de différentes populations plus ou moins homogènes. Le second implique l’union de personnes ethniquement hétérogènes et dont les descendants constitueront une nouvelle entité n’appartenant à aucun les deux parents. Mais, dans le contexte américain, ces deux notions semblent même se renforcer l’un l’autre à travers une dialectique où, d’un côté, on empêche le métissage en multipliant les législations contre sa pratique et, de l’autre, on promeut par l’intermédiaire d’un mythe national une sorte d’harmonie transcendant le tout, un macrocosme de la loi dite du « Separate but Equal », qui avait permis de justifier, les décennies durant, la ségrégation raciale dans le Sud du pays.
