Publié à Boston en 1847, Evangeline – A Tale of Acadie , de Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, qui a été traduit en français en 1865 par Pamphile Le May, soulève des questions inusitées dans le cadre de la constitution du patrimoine littéraire en Acadie et du projet d’édition critique des classiques acadiens. Quelle place en effet convient-il de réserver à un texte rédigé en anglais par un auteur américain qui n’est jamais venu en Acadie, et qui a été traduit de surcroît par un Canadien français originaire de la province de Québec? Un livre comme celui-ci mérite-il d’être considéré comme un classique acadien ou à tout le moins comme une oeuvre emblématique de l’Acadie? Cet article aborde quelques éléments relatifs au processus de la genèse, de la traduction et de la réception d’ Evangeline , éléments qui alimentent la réflexion sur la place qu’il convient de réserver à cette oeuvre dans le patrimoine littéraire acadien, ainsi que sur la notion de classique dans le contexte des petites littératures.
