Abstract
La célébrité et la fécondité d’ Orientalism dans des domaines très divers du savoir (analyse littéraire, science politique, histoire de l’art, socioanthropologie, etc.) ne furent pas sans entraîner un certain nombre d’extrapolations voire de malentendus dont l’histoire de toute réception critique est nourrie. Accompagnant son ouvrage d’une « Postface » (1994) puis d’une « Préface » (2003), l’auteur a davantage cherché à justifier qu’à modifier ses thèses initiales, alors que certaines d’entre elles avaient été malmenées comme nous le montrons ici ; à marquer sa présence d’auteur dans les débats nés de son livre de 1978, poursuivant ainsi sa réflexion dans de nouveaux contextes postcoloniaux et postmodernes. Pour autant, il apparaît qu’Edward Said ne pouvait guère modifier certaines représentations identitaires et essentialistes de son entreprise en dépit de tous ses efforts et que les deux péritextes très argumentés dont est désormais muni le livre font aussi figure d’accompagnements testamentaires d’un auteur inquiet du devenir de l’ensemble de son œuvre.
