Abstract
La fécondité de la France et celle du Québec ont connu des évolutions fort différentes depuis le XIXe siècle : diminution précoce et graduelle dans le premier cas, tardive et rapide dans le second. Depuis le milieu des années 1960, la fécondité est plus élevée en France qu’au Québec, alors que l’inverse a longtemps prévalu. La descendance finale des générations n’est jamais tombée en dessous de deux enfants par femme en France, tandis que c’est le cas au Québec pour toutes les générations nées depuis le milieu des années 1940. Longtemps plus fréquentes au Québec, les familles de trois enfants ou plus sont maintenant plus répandues en France. Le Québec se distingue par une plus grande part de femmes sans enfant. Dans les deux sociétés, l’âge moyen à la maternité augmente depuis le milieu des années 1970, essentiellement parce que la première maternité est retardée. Ce mouvement a été plus rapide en France, mais le Québec effectue un rattrapage depuis le début de ce siècle. Quant à la proportion des naissances hors mariage, peu élevée jusque dans les années 1970, elle a crû rapidement dans les deux sociétés, plus rapidement au Québec qu’en France.
