Abstract
Panic Diaries brings historical, sociological and literary theories together in an examination of panic. Sociologist Jackie Orr argues that the meaning of panic has evolved from a normal reaction to a threatening situation, to an increasingly internalised, pathologised and, ultimately, psychiatrised disorder located somewhere within an individual. In a renewed climate of panic over terrorism, Orr's study makes a timely contribution to the social history of mental disorders. It also adds to the growing range of scholarship that is critical of the insidious relationship between psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry. Orr contends that historically panic entailed a collective reaction to an external threat, such as fire, suffocation or war. Panic, prior to the Second World War, became a subject for studies of crowds and it later gained attention from the US government, which sponsored social-scientific research aimed at designing methods to manage civil panic. In 1938, Orson Welles delivered a radio broadcast adaptation of War of the Worlds, which consequently demonstrated the tremendous power of the media to generate panic. Reactions to the broadcast included a flurry of media reports, communication breakdowns, traffic jams, police inquiries, and disrupted religious services (p. 36); in short, the event triggered a moment of chaotic civil disorder. H. G. Wells's fictitious account of Martians invading the United States set the stage for the real post-Second World War threat of the atomic bomb and panic assumed a new layer of legitimacy.
