Seront présentés, dans le présent article, les résultats partiels d’une étude ethnographique menée dans un ministère de la fonction publique canadienne situé en milieu minoritaire francophone (Moncton, Nouveau-Brunswick). Il sera notamment question de la place qu’occupe la traduction dans ce milieu de travail et du rôle qu’elle y joue. L’étude révèle que même si l’anglais et le français sont les langues officielles de travail dans ce ministère (en vertu de laLoi sur les langues officiellesdu Canada), c’est l’anglais qui demeure la langue de travail commune ; c’est ainsi grâce à la traduction que le ministère est en mesure de répondre à ses obligations en matière de langue de travail. Il s’agit donc d’un environnement de travail diglossique où les deux langues, malgré leur statut officiel, n’ont ni le même poids ni le même prestige. Cette situation soulève des questions importantes sur la place du français comme langue de travail, les stratégies de traduction privilégiées, les rapports de pouvoir entre les langues et les locuteurs, et enfin l’efficacité de la politique linguistique institutionnelle du gouvernement du Canada.
