La formation infirmière a vu le jour dans les années 1870 sous l’impulsion de médecins à la Croix-Rouge et dans les hôpitaux de l’Assistance Publique de Paris. Léonie Chaptal a joué un rôle fondamental dans l’élaboration du premier programme d’études, programme qui repose sur les savoirs utiles à l’infirmière pour seconder le médecin. Toutefois, les écoles fondées en France à partir du courant de Florence Nightingale mettent l’accent sur l’autonomie professionnelle de l’infirmière. Formation et profession infirmière évoluent donc dans une ambivalence qui conduit à développer soit « les techniques de soins » proches des techniques médicales, soit une autonomie revendiquée par le « rôle propre » et la démarche clinique infirmière. Aujourd’hui la profession infirmière se retrouve au cœur de réformes : transfert de compétences, validation des acquis de l’expérience, réforme du programme d’études avec un éventuel rapprochement de l’université. Après avoir défini les critères d’une science en prenant exemple sur le modèle des sciences de l’éducation, l’étude des recherches infirmières publiées dans l’ARSI de 1985 à 2005 montre que la recherche infirmière existe et donne un aperçu des thèmes explorés, souvent référés aux sciences humaines ; d’où une première approche des sciences de référence, sur lesquelles les sciences infirmières peuvent s’établir et s’épanouir ; l’intitulé « sciences infirmières » étant uniquement utilisé au Québec.
