Résumé Parce qu’elle met en question la survie de l’espèce humaine, la crise écologique qui s’intensifie appelle une réflexion éthique, mais elle interpelle du même coup les institutions économiques qui façonnent notre mode d’organisation, et donc notre rapport à la nature. La réflexion éthique appliquée à l’entreprise est davantage qu’une transposition de la dynamique observable à l’échelle individuelle. Fruit de choix éthiques antérieurs, l’entreprise est le théâtre d’une visée éthique susceptible de se déployer dans un espace plus ou moins favorable. Cet article tente d’esquisser l’espace que les institutions économiques offrent au déploiement d’une éthique écologique. Il se penche sur le secteur bancaire pour analyser, à travers les rapports de développement durable publiés récemment, comment se configure la préoccupation environnementale et son articulation autour des impératifs traditionnels de l’organisation capitaliste. Le discours des entreprises que nous avons étudiées illustre une approche parfois légaliste, et le plus souvent utilitaire, des questions environnementales. En fait, l’espace d’une visée éthique au sein des institutions économiques est assez restreint en raison des impératifs auxquels elles sont soumises et des choix éthiques antérieurs, qui correspondent à une éthique atemporelle incapable de recevoir une visée éthique à l’ère de la responsabilité. Il y a lieu de repenser les institutions économiques pour qu’elles soient plus à même de favoriser des choix éthiques au regard des impératifs écologiques actuels.
