Effects of Maternal Exercise Intensity on Neonatal Morphometrics

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between maternal exercise intensity and neonatal morphometrics. METHODS: At 16 – 20 weeks gestation healthy pregnant women were divided into either mild (30%VO2peak; N=108) or moderate (70%VO2peak; N=44) exercise programs in which they participated three times per week from study entry until delivery. Within 6 to 18 hours after birth neonatal morphometrics were measured: body weight, skinfolds: umbilical, suprailiac, subscapular, anterior thigh, biceps, triceps, circumferences: head, arm, mid-thigh, calf, chest, abdominal; and crown-heel, crown-rump, arm, forearm, thigh and leg lengths. Neonatal total fat mass was calculated (Dauncey et al. Arch Dis Child 3:223–227, 1977). RESULTS: Neonatal body weight was not different between programs (3523 ± 48g, 3566 ± 63g, respectively). Conversely, total fat mass was higher P<0.05 in the neonates of mildly exercising women (961 ± 42g vs 797 ± 63g, respectively). Additionally, anthropometric measurements, suprailiac, triceps and subscapular skinfolds, arm length and volume of fat upper limb were significantly higher (P<0.05) for the mild exercise program compared to the moderate exercise program. In both programs volume of fat on the lower limb had the highest correlation with total fat mass. Stepwise multiple regression analysis using total fat mass (g) as the criterion for neonatal fat patterning selected volume of fat on lower limb (R2= 0.62) and volume of fat on trunk (R2 change = 0.35) for the mild exercise program and triceps skinfold (R2 = 0.81) and volume of fat on lower limb (R2 change = 0.12) for the moderate exercise program. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that both the mild and moderate maternal exercise programs do not influence neonatal body weight. Although total fat mass was significantly higher for the mild exercise program, the variance in total fat mass was not due to exercise intensity per se but to the maternal BMI, as 67% of the mild exercising women had a BMI ≥ 25, with 45% of those women being in the obese range BMI ≥ 30, whereas only 12% had a BMI ≥ 25 in the moderate exercise program.
