Abstract
HERE is today, more than ever before, a greater urgency to make T new breakthroughs in applied and basic research in the plant sciences.New techniques to breed improved, high-yielding resistant crops well adapted to the climatic and edaphic conditions in their regions of prospective cultivation are desiderata.Furthermore, there is a need to learn more about basic physiological processes involving floral initiation, auxin synthesis, mineral uptake, translocation of metabolites, selfincompatibility, meiosis, seed maturation, etc.In the present paper, a new breeding method is described using in uitro, excised-preanthesis grass inflorescences (culms) .Finally, some of the implications and applications of in vitro culture in applied and basic research are considered. MATERIALS AND METHODSDuring the summer of 1967, 98 intra-and interspecific crosses, as well as a few intergeneric crosses, were made in the experimental research gardens at the Institute of Genetics in Lund.The breeding material was comprised of species belonging to the temperate, smallseeded genera Agrostis L., Podagrostis (GRISEB.)SCRIBN.& MERR., and Polypogon DESF.These genera have been traditionally treated as mem-
