Abstract Seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert sind Chemiker bestrebt, mehr über die faszinierende und rätselhafte Beziehung zwischen der Molekülstruktur und dem Geruch herauszufinden. Trotz intensiver Forschung zu Struktur‐Geruchs‐Beziehungen bleibt die Vorhersage des Geruchs einer neuen Verbindung aber eine statistische Übung, und Modelle können bestenfalls Aussagen über die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Art, Schwellenwert und Intensität eines Geruchs treffen. Überraschungen sind auf diesem Gebiet alltäglich, und der Zufall bleibt ein wichtiger Faktor bei der Entdeckung neuer Duftstoffe. Neuere Erkenntnisse zum Mechanismus der Geruchswahrnehmung bieten eine Erklärung hierfür und lassen darauf schließen, dass sich unsere Fähigkeit zur Vorhersage der Geruchseigenschaften von Verbindungen in naher Zukunft nicht wesentlich verbessern wird.
