For societies ravaged by civil wars that have pitted ethnic, national, or religious groups against each other, ensuring a peaceful future requires that the right formula be found to provide all groups with access to a commonly held political power. Quite rightly, the scholars and policymakers involved in this pursuit have eschewed the belief that there exists a single, standard template for all situations. Instead, they have endeavored to understand the unique conditions and circumstances of particular conflict situations in order to uncover a viable method of sharing power. Thus, any analytic effort that adds a new alternative to the set of possible arrangements or that comprehensively assesses various formulas for sharing power across a range of postconflict cases provides a valuable service to the policy and academic communities immersed in the challenges of managing communal diversities, postconflict state-building, or the institutionalization of democratic peace.
