Influence of Amount and Intensity of Physical Activity on Blood Lipid Profile in Postmenopausal Women

Abstract
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of different amounts and intensities of physical activity on blood lipid profile in postmenopausal women. METHODS: 437 postmenopausal women (age 58.1±6.4 y), were administered a physical activity questionnaire (Godin & Shephard, 1985) and classified into tertiles for amount of physical activity (low, moderate, and high) and intensity of physical activity (intense or not intense, based on whether they exercised at an intensity to induce sweating). Blood samples were analyzed for total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL. RESULTS: There was a significant effect for amount of physical activity on total cholesterol to HDL ratio (p<0.05). Post Hoc analyses revealed that the group participating in a lower amount of physical activity had significantly higher total cholesterol to HDL ratio compared to the two other groups (4.10±1.3 vs. 3.80±1.1 vs. 3.76±1.0 for low, moderate, and high amounts of physical activity). No significant difference was observed in total cholesterol to HDL ratio between subjects participating in moderate and high amounts of physical activity. In sub analyses based on BMI groups, the amount of physical activity was significantly related to total cholesterol to HDL ratio (P<0.05) in obese subjects. Specifically, obese subjects in the lower physical activity group had a higher total cholesterol to HDL ratio compared to obese subjects in the high physical activity group (4.7±1.2 vs 4.1± 0.9, p<0.05). There was no effect of intensity of physical activity on blood lipid levels. CONCLUSION: A moderate amount of physical activity (equivalent to walking 3–6 times per week for >15 minutes per session) is sufficient to result in significantly lower total cholesterol to HDL ratio in postmenopausal women. However, obese postmenopausal women need a higher amount of physical activity to reduce total cholesterol to HDL ratio.
