Abstract
Every other winter, an eclectic and highly qualified group of mountaineers, clinicians, high-altitude scientists, and bench researchers who have an interest in hypoxia gather in the Canadian Rocky Mountains to socialize, ski, and, of course, discuss the latest research on the effects of low oxygen tension on biological systems. This book is the proceedings of the 11th International Hypoxia Symposium, held in 1999 in Jasper National Park. It is an interesting and informative compendium of articles for those who wish to understand where the frontiers are in the study of hypoxia. The book begins with a fascinating paper on the career and research of Herb Hultgren (1917–1997), a Stanford cardiologist and pioneer in the study of high-altitude pulmonary edema. It finishes with a tribute to Niels Lassen (1926–1997), a premier researcher into the effects of altitude on cerebral blood flow and functional brain mapping. In between is a well-chosen mix of clinical and basic science monographs from luminaries in the field, which quickly brings the reader up-to-date on the “state-of-the-art” on hypoxia. The first several chapters are dedicated to mountain medicine, with subsequent sections on high-altitude pulmonary edema, the effects of hypoxia on the blood-brain barrier and the brain, lactate metabolism and vascular growth, and human physiology in extreme hypoxia. The volume also includes abstracts of original research presented at the symposium's oral and poster sessions. As a group, these presentations give deep insight into the work being done in the field and by whom, and they are an excellent collection to serve as a springboard for further reading and research. While this is a book for those with a special interest in hypoxia, others may find it useful. It is not light reading and isn’t meant to be read cover to cover, but it is an excellent way to get acquainted with what is known about the subject, on-going research, and who is doing it. I highly recommend this book if you have even a passing interest in high-altitude hypoxia or hypoxia from other causes. It may even inspire you to be a part of the next symposium.
