Rhythm of the Pulse: South Asian Traditional Healers and their Healing Practices in Toronto

Abstract
Abstract South Asians in the diaspora use a wide variety of traditional healers and healing practices, such as Ayurveda, Unani, Sahaja, Shamanism, Sidda, homeopathy, naturopathy, babajis (wise men), pundits and granthis (holy men) and jyotshis (fortune tellers or astrologers). Outside of the communities directly involved in these healing traditions, not much is known about the healers and the kinds of healing practices they engage in. This research explores and offers insights into South Asian traditional healers and their healing practices in the Greater Toronto Area, in Canada. The work of six individuals (five males and one female) who identified as South Asian traditional healers is discussed; they described their healing practices, shared issues related to assessment and treatment of patients' presenting problems, and talked about collaboration between Western healthcare practitioners and themselves. Interviews were analyzed using grounded theory.
