Au Mexique, la différence entre indígenas (indiens) et mestizos (« métis » = non-indiens) est posée comme un a priori. Il ne s’agit pas seulement de rhétorique, mais d’une séparation concrète, qui occupe une place centrale dans l’agencement de la société mexicaine et dans son image. Dans cet article on postule que ce schème de séparation repose sur une idéologie séparatiste portée par les détenteurs d’un pouvoir (administratif, politique, religieux ou scientifique) tant du côté majoritaire que minoritaire. Celle-ci suppose l’existence de deux groupes de citoyens distingués selon des critères divers (politiques, juridiques, culturels ou éducatifs) combinés dans des systèmes qui changent au cours du temps et selon les régions. A partir du cas des migrants originaires de la région mixtèque établis à Tijuana, on montre que cette idéologie séparatiste se perpétue, et même s’affirme, alors que les conditions matérielles de la séparation disparaissent. Du local au national, dans ses représentations populaires ou savantes, la société mexicaine est vue et pensée à travers le prisme du séparatisme, y compirs le « séparatisme méthodologique » des sciences sociales. Elle est aussi organisée par des politiques publiques séparatistes, inspirées par les détenteurs du savoir (religieux, chercheurs) avec l’objectif « d’améliorer » les conditions des minoritaires.
