Abstract

Malgré une dynamique attestée par de nombreux travaux dans des domaines très divers, la sociolinguistique (française) semble encore traîner le poids d’une certaine culpabilité et manquer d’une pleine légitimité dans le champ des sciences du langage, notamment à travers un positionnement fragile par rapport à « la » linguistique. Dans ce texte, nous nous penchons sur ces problèmes en envisageant d’une part les racines historiques et épistémologiques de ce sentiment diffus mais bien réel et parfois même inhibant, et en proposant d’autre part quelques pistes de réflexion pour tenter de modifier cette place marginale de la sociolinguistique. Or, ceci ne nous paraît possible qu’en acceptant de clairement assumer certains postulats fondamentaux relatifs à l’intervention, au(x) format(s) des méthodologies d’enquête et à leurs conséquences épistémologiques, à certains concepts, à la dimension de la sociolinguistique urbaine et aux questions plus générales de la nomination du champ. Par ailleurs, la « reconquête » de la description, c’est-à-dire un champ fondamental des sciences du langage abandonné aux tenants d’une linguistique plus formelle mais sans doute pas plus « scientifique », nous paraît à l’heure actuelle essentielle et figure selon nous comme la meilleure illustration de ce que pourrait être une « autre » façon de faire de la sociolinguistique. Nous espérons ainsi contribuer à un débat qui envisage le repositionnement de la sociolinguistique dans le champ scientifique en proposant, pour notre part, quelques pistes pour sortir de la « culpabilité ».
