Abstract
MUCH of the scholarship on Nicholas Udall (1504–56) is focused on the plays attributed to him, yet, in his own time Udall was respected by his contemporaries primarily as a humanist scholar, educator, and translator. Indeed, the reconstructed list of Udall’s books reinforces his contemporaries’ opinion of him and reveals Udall as a representative and well-connected figure of Tudor humanism. Because neither Udall’s will nor a probate inventory itemizing his books has been discovered, the information about his library has been, until now, gathered from extant books identified through his characteristic Latin and Greek inscription (Sum Nicolai Vdalli; Eιμί Nικoλάoυ του oύδάλλου). The titles of Udall’s inscribed books have been recorded in two lists, one compiled by A. B. Emden in his biographical register of Oxford scholars and the other by Udall’s early biographer, G. Scheurweghs.1 New titles have been added by William Edgerton and Margaret Lane Ford.2 In the present survey, I shall provide a full bibliographical description of Udall’s known books, delineating what can be discerned of his book collecting habits throughout his life. Udall’s scrupulous habit of annotating his early books allows us to trace his academic peregrinations and subsequent ownership marks in his extant volumes provide evidence of his college associations and illustrate contemporary practices of book sharing and transfers.
