Stable Charge/Discharge Cycle Performance of a LiFePO<sub>4</sub> Cathode Prepared with a Carboxymethly Cellulose Binder

Abstract
Chemically treated aluminum (Al) foils were used as cathode current collectors to prevent the repulsion of a water-based cathode slurry. Measuring the angle of contact between the water and the Al foils prepared via deep chemical treatment proved difficult because the water dropped onto the Al foil could not form a measureable droplet and spread evenly across the Al surface. Increasing the apparent wettability of the Al foils via chemical treatment allowed the formation of uniform cathode films with a water-based cathode slurry. The uniform cathode films composed of LiFePO 4 , carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and conducting carbon exhibited stable charge/discharge cycling behavior and good rate performance, comparable to that of a LiFePO 4 cathode film prepared with a polyvinylidene difluoride (PVdF) binder.
