Abstract
Dans les 75 années postérieures à la révolution américaine, la colonisation et la mise en valeur constituèrent l’essentiel de l’agriculture dans le Haut-Canada. En 1860, à la veille de la Confédération canadienne – quand cette province devint le cœur de celle de l’Ontario –, il s’agissait encore d’une économie principalement rurale. Cet article étudie son développement depuis les perspectives des hommes et des femmes qui en créèrent les exploitations rurales et les activités qui leur étaient associées, mettant en place une économie balancée aux échanges locaux importants. L’historiographie canadienne et impériale a dépeint une économie étroitement spécialisée et orientée vers l’exportation, alors que les produits vendus à l’extérieur n’étaient qu’un aspect d’une relation économique beaucoup plus complexe avec la Grande-Bretagne. Cette même relation soutenait l’immigration, l’importation et la création de capital, le développement des technologies clés et des institutions de l’économie du XIX e siècle.
