Abstract
Comment expliquer l'extraordinaire longévité du « Grand Bailliage de Brandebourg de l'Ordre des chevaliers de Saint-Jean de l'Hôpital de Jérusalem », branche allemande de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean fondée au XIIIe siècle, et surtout sa survie dans la période troublée que traverse l'Allemagne de 1918 à 1945 ?Telle fut la première interrogation à l'origine de cette thèse. 2L'Ordre de Saint-Jean (ainsi appellerons-nous le Bailliage de Brandebourg) a tout d'abord été défini de trois façons : un ordre religieux hospitalier entretenant hôpitaux et maisons de soin, dont l'histoire croise celle du protestantisme allemand ; une confrérie nobiliaire (en cela, son étude s'adjoint aux récents travaux sur les noblesses allemandes proposant une analyse socio-culturelle 1 ) ; enfin, un cercle regroupant des élites aristocratiques très proches du pouvoir, y compris après 1918, s'insérant donc dans les études politiques de la République de Weimar et du IIIème Reich.Pourtant, l'historiographie a laissé dans l'ombre l'Ordre de Saint-Jean.Hormis quelques publications internes rédigées par les chevaliers eux-mêmes (Johanniter), aucune étude d'ensemble n'existe sur la période L'Ordre de Saint-Jean en Allemagne .La tradition en question -un...
