Abstract
This volume of Pathology Case Reviews focuses on pathology of the thyroid. The topics include areas of some controversy as well as updates on important but unusual thyroid lesions. The first topic is one of much controversy: The “follicular variant of papillary carcinoma.” This article reviews this group of lesions from the point of view of cytology and histopathology, and also investigates the molecular aspects of these tumors. The group from the University of Toronto reviews C-cell lesions of the thyroid and their molecular biology as it does not relate to diagnosis or therapeutics. The topic of “poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma,” another controversial area in thyroid pathology, is reviewed by the group from the University of Turin which has written extensively on this topic. They have one of the world's largest experiences with the pathology and clinical aspects of these unusual thyroid tumors. Dr. Jennifer Hunt reviews radiation associated lesions of the thyroid including the acute and chronic effects on the histopathology of the thyroid from various types of external and internal radiation. This article also reviews the important and growing experience with radiation associated thyroid neoplasia and its molecular pathogenesis. Basolo et al from the University of Pisa have done much of the seminal work on the BRAF mutation and thyroid neoplasms. They review the value of BRAF mutations in diagnosis and prognostication of thyroid neoplasms, and the important and growing area of BRAF mutation in molecular pharmacotherapeutics of metastatic thyroid cancers. Finally, Dr. Uldesman, an internationally renowned endocrine surgeon, and colleagues from Yale University review the interactions between pathologists and surgeons, both in the preoperative and intraoperative settings. The importance of respect between these 2 types of physicians is emphasized repeatedly, and the concept of “gotcha” is debunked. We hope that the readership of Pathology Case Reviews will enjoy this issue and be educated as we, the coeditors, have been.
