Résumé Cet article relate certains faits marquants de l’histoire récente de trois domaines d’application des mathématiques en gestion, soit la statistique, la recherche opérationnelle et l’ingénierie financière. Il décrit des perspectives de développements futurs dans chacun de ces domaines. La première partie se concentre sur le développement de méthodes statistiques essentielles au monde des affaires, à partir des travaux de Ronald A. Fisher en 1925. La deuxième partie retrace les applications de la recherche opérationnelle depuis son émergence durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale : tout d’abord militaires, puis industrielles, et finalement pour la planification des transports. On y trouve également une chronologie de l’élaboration des diverses méthodes de la recherche opérationnelle. La troisième partie raconte l’évolution de la finance mathématique à partir des travaux de Louis Bachelier en 1900. On y décrit les techniques mathématiques utilisées dans le domaine de la finance au cours des dernières décennies et on explique comment l’utilisation croissante des méthodes quantitatives en finance a donné naissance à une nouvelle profession, l’ingénierie financière. Les défis rencontrés aujourd’hui dans ces disciplines sont liés à la taille et à la complexité grandissantes des problèmes et des structures de données, à l’intégration de l’information, à la prise en considération de l’incertitude et à la gestion intégrée du risque.
