Comprehensive Modelling of the Pitting Biocorrosion of Steel

Abstract
In this paper, a comprehensive mathematical model was developed in order to estimate the instantaneous biocorrosion pit depth and shape on steel structures in sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) environments. The SRB cathodic depolarization theory was adopted as the SRB-influenced biocorrosion mechanism. The model was applied to marine, landfill, and freshwater environments. The comprehensive feature of the model made it possible to predict the pitting biocorrosion growth rate and the pit depths and shapes in each of the above environments. The model results were found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental data found in the literature under the identical conditions. Dans cet article, on a mis au point un modèle mathématique complet afin d'estimer la profondeur et la forme des fissures de biocorrosion instantanée sur des structures d'acier dans des milieux de bactéries réductrices de sulfate (SRB). La théorie de dépolarisation cathodique des SRB a été adoptée comme mécanisme de biocorrosion influencé par les SRB. Le modèle a été appliqué à des environnements marins, de décharges et d'eau douce. La nature générale du modèle a permis de prédire la vitesse de croissance de biocorrosion des fissures ainsi que les profondeurs et les formes des fissures dans chacun des environnements ci-dessus. On a trouvé que les résultats du modèle concordaient raisonnablement avec les données expérimentales trouvées dans la littérature scientifique dans des conditions identiques.
