Abstract
De 1930 à 1960, l’affirmation d’un champ littéraire ayant ses règles propres s’est faite pour plusieurs écrivains québécois à travers la sublimation de la foi chrétienne. Ce n’est pas en réclamant le droit à l’écrivain catholique d’être fidèle à son œuvre, mais en réclamant le droit à l’écrivain catholique d’être fidèle à lui-même que des critiques littéraires canadiens trouveront le moyen de libérer la littérature de l’emprise cléricale tout en ayant l’impression, par ce choix même, de servir l’avenir de l’Église. Pour mieux scander les étapes de cette histoire, cet article se penche sur la pensée esthétique de trois critiques littéraires. Les écrits de Carmel Brouillard, Guy Sylvestre et Gilles Marcotte correspondent en effet à trois moments de la conscience esthétique catholique, moment qui trouvent à s’exprimer dans les notions de morale, transcendance et dialogue. C’est ainsi qu’en revenant à ces trois auteurs, cet article entend dégager des postures et des sensibilités esthétiques canadiennes-françaises qui distinguent la critique catholique dans les années charnières qui précèdent et suivent immédiatement la Deuxième Guerre mondiale.
