Résumé L’article propose une analyse comparée des dépenses de consommation des ménages canadiens et français en mettant l’accent sur la situation des classes moyennes dans les deux pays. La structure typique de la consommation permet de distinguer le fractionnement qui se dessine au sein de ces dernières. Dans les deux pays, une partie des classes moyennes est tirée vers le bas de la hiérarchie sociale alors qu’une autre partie s’aligne plutôt sur la consommation des classes plus favorisées. Ce fractionnement observable au centre de la hiérarchie sociale alimente le sentiment d’être déclassé constaté au sein des classes moyennes, notamment en France. L’analyse montre une grande convergence, entre les deux pays, des changements dans la structure des dépenses. Par ailleurs, de nouveaux besoins, notamment pour le transport et les loisirs marchands, apparaissent dans toutes les classes socioéconomiques dans les deux pays, mais les ménages plus riches accroissent leur effort budgétaire plus rapidement. Quand un poste de consommation est dynamique temporellement (quand son coefficient budgétaire augmente lorsque le revenu croît), il est généralement plus différencié socialement. Cela signifie que les ménages les plus riches augmentent plus vite leur consommation de biens et services discrétionnaires que les ménages moins favorisés, tant au Canada qu’en France.
