En dpit des similitudes entre les tats-Unis et le Canada, il existe des diffrences subtiles, mais palpables, entre les deux pays. Alors que les tats-Unis accueillent une population jamacaine beaucoup plus importante que celle du Canada -de respectivement 554 000 et 122 340 individus -les aires mtropolitaines de Miami et de Toronto ont des populations jamacaines comparables, de respectivement 94 691 et 93 315 personnes. Il existe cependant une diffrence de statut conomique entre les deux populations, mesure par les niveaux de revenus et d'ducation, tous deux plus levs Miami qu' Toronto. Le prsent travail tudie quelques-unes des raisons de ces divergences. Les politiques d'immigration, qui influent dans certains cas sur les possibilits d'emploi des immigrants et leur accs au march du travail, ont une grande importance pour le potentiel de mobilit socio-conomique ascendante.
