The cover picture shows stick and space-filling models of a crystal structure that contains transition metal ions [Mn(H2O)6]2+ (red) and their accompanying ClO4− anions (green) suspended in a sea of 4,7-phenanthroline "ligands" (blue). Curiously, there are no direct manganese–nitrogen bonds. This material is instead knitted together entirely by hydrogen bonds between coordinated water molecules and phenanthroline molecules. The inset figure (top right) depicts schematically the concepts of first-sphere (dark blue) and second-sphere (light blue) coordination. This second-sphere hydrogen bonding may be of particular interest as a methodology for the distribution of metal ions in the solid state, as many magnetic and electronic properties are known to be sensitive to spatial arrangements.
