Suite au montage d’un fichier informatique - à partir d’une série de six fichiers administratifs annuels - permettant l’observation suivie des individus, l’auteur présente une table des premiers départs pour les enseignants en fonction au 30 septembre 1970 au cours des cinq années subséquentes (1971 à 1975). Seuls sont considérés les enseignants réguliers et à temps complet des commissions scolaires (réseau public). L’auteur distingue les sous-cohortes des enseignants de sexe masculin et ceux de sexe féminin, et tient compte de deux types de départ : a) les « abandons » ou départs volontaires et b) les « mutations » ou changements de corps d’emploi â l’intérieur du milieu de l’enseignement. Après une série de considérations d’ordre méthodologique, l’auteur montre, dans un premier temps, comment le quotient de départ par abandon évolue de façon différente du quotient de départ par mutation dans le temps : le premier diminue et le second augmente. Dans un second temps, l’auteur, faisant intervenir la variable « sexe », met en relief le fait que l’évolution du quotient global de départ (pour toute cause) est un pâle reflet du comportement fondamental des femmes et des hommes face au risque abandon d’une part et face au risque mutation d’autre part. Enfin, l’auteur termine en remettant en question l’hypothèse sous-jacente, à savoir le non retour dès départs entre le moment du départ et la fin de la période d’observation, puisque les retours semblent constitués un phénomène important chez les départs.
