Abstract
me propose d'examiner dans le present article de quelle maniere l'ecrivain Jean Simard (1916-2005) a pratique l'art de la traduction, plus particulierement dans la version francaise de The Watch That Ends the Night de Hugh MacLennan qu'il a fait paraitre en 1967 a Montreal chez HMH. Hugh MacLennan est alors un ecrivain canadien-anglais de renom, auteur de Two Solitudes (1945), roman qui lui vaut premier prix du Gouverneur general (il en remportera un nombre impressionnant de cinq au fil de sa carriere litteraire). Two Solitudes ne sera traduit en francais qu'en 1963, comme pour donner raison, en quelque sorte, a ce qu'en est venue a signifier cette expression des deux solitudes, c'est-a-dire la presence malaisee, cote a cote, des deux principaux groupes linguistiques et culturels du Canada — anglophones et francophones —, et la relation distante, souvent faite d'ignorance, de mefiance et d'incomprehension qu'entretiennent ces deux groupes. Ne en Nouvelle-Ecosse, MacLennan (1907-90) arrive a Montreal dans les annees 1930, entre d'autres raisons, pour enseigner au Lower Canada College. Il publie premier roman, Barometer Rising, en 1941, qui deviendra en francais, dans la traduction de Jean Simard, Le temps tournera au beau (1966). Quant a The Watch That Ends the Night, c'est un roman important qui parait en 1959 et que plusieurs considerent comme son plus beau livre. C'est l'avis en tout cas, de traducteur, tel qu'il l'affirme a Gilles Marcotte dans une interview radiophonique diffusee sur Radio-Canada a l'emission Des livres et des hommes, le 3 octobre 1967.1 Je traduis des livres qui me plaisent, y explique Simard. C'est la seule et unique raison. Dans ce roman qui se deroule a Montreal au debut des annees cinquante, il est souvent question de l'epoque de l'entre-deux-guerres.
