PURPOSE: The purpose was to examine the effect of dietary fasting on physical balance among university aged Caucasian women (N=22). METHODS: Demographic and dietary information was obtained using a background questionnaire and a 24-hour dietary recall. Functional measurements included grip strength, functional reach (dynamic balance) and timed single limb stance (static balance). The participants were tested under two trial conditions fasted and non-fasted and these two conditions were counter-balanced with two weeks between trials. For the fasting trial, participants were asked to refrain from consuming any food or caffeinated beverages for 15 hours prior to testing. RESULTS: The average age of the participants was 22 years of age and over 82% described their health as very good or excellent. The results showed that dietary fasting resulted in significant decline in functional reach (p<0.000), ability to balance in a single limb stance with eyes open, on both the dominant and non-dominant leg (p=0.011 and p=0.002 respectively), and with eyes closed trial on the dominant leg (p=0.002). Thus, the study showed that an interrupted dietary intake negatively affects one's ability to maintain physical balance. CONCLUSIONS: The findings have implications for athletic performance for younger individuals as well as falls prevention among older adults.
