En 1850, The Scarlet Letter de Nathaniel Hawthorne est publié avec un succès immédiat auprès du public américain. Cependant, « The Custom-House », l’introduction à l’histoire d’Hester Prynne, attire l’attention, dérange et fait couler beaucoup d’encre. Pourtant l’histoire de la femme déchue aurait davantage dû choquer la société puritaine américaine de l’époque que cette longue introduction aux apparences inoffensives. Nous nous sommes interrogée sur le contenu de cette dernière. Pour cela, nous avons adopté un point de vue historique. Nous nous intéressons d’abord aux éléments historiques de « The Custom-House » et à ceux qui sont présentés comme tels par l’auteur. Puis nous rendons compte de la polémique relative à la publication de cette introduction. Ensuite, nous effectuons une analyse contrastive des onze traductions en français de cette introduction en accordant une attention particulière à leur dimension historique. Cela nous permet de formuler des hypothèses sur la présence ou l’absence de « The Custom-House » en traduction ; d’établir quels éléments historiques se retrouvent dans les traductions et quels sont ceux qui sont omis, pour ensuite proposer les raisons possibles de ces choix ; et enfin d’énoncer dans quelle mesure ces derniers modifient l’illusion de vraisemblance produite. En conclusion, nous constatons que quatre des six traductions qui incluent l’introduction transmettent presque intégralement les éléments non fictionnels au lecteur, permettant ainsi de conserver l’illusion de réel créée par Hawthorne.
