Abstract

Résumé Au moment où l’École des HEC était fondée en 1907, la discipline de l’économie existait depuis presque un siècle et demi. De philosophie morale au XVIII e siècle à économie politique au XIX e puis à science économique au XX e , elle a connu de multiples rebondissements. Quatre dates en particulier s’imposent comme points tournants : 1776 avec Adam Smith, le père du libéralisme économique; 1870 avec la révolution dite «néoclassique» de la théorie de la valeur; 1936 avec John Maynard Keynes et la naissance de la macroéconomie; et les années 1970 avec la remise en question du rôle de l’État comme stabilisateur de l’économie à travers le monétarisme et les «nouveaux classiques». Après avoir remonté le cours de l’histoire de la discipline économique, nous nous tournons vers son avenir avec les thèmes et les problématiques majeurs qui occuperont vraisemblablement les économistes à court et à moyen terme dans cinq domaines : la macroéconomie, l’économie du travail, l’économétrie, l’économie politique et l’organisation industrielle. Nous en concluons que l’avenir s’annonce très riche en problématiques de recherche pertinentes pour la société à maints égards. Grâce à un cadre d’analyse et à des outils théoriques et informatiques sophistiqués, l’économiste de demain pourra continuer de jouer le rôle pas toujours apprécié de critique des politiques publiques et de défenseur de la prise en considération de l’environnement et des règles en vigueur sur le comportement des individus.
