DESCRIPTION: This book is a very significant addition to a previous book, Dempsey’s Regulation of Breathing, 2nd Edition (Marcel Dekker, Inc., 1995), published in The Lung Biology in Health and Disease series. The book is about the most current advances in the control of breathing, both in health and disease. PURPOSE: The purpose is to bring about a closer liaison between basic research and patient care. The editors accomplish this superbly. There is a very good balance between basic science and clinical applications in general. AUDIENCE: The audience is clinicians, clinical investigators, and basic scientists in the fields of respiratory diseases, neuropathophysiology, sleep disturbances, critical medical care, and cardiology. FEATURES: This book has a diverse content ranging from basic physiology to lung transplantation, including pediatric and geriatric topics, awake and asleep disturbances, and hypo- and hyper-ventilation. The contributors are the very top experts in the topics selected. It would be hard to have a better selection. The presentation in general is pleasant, well organized, and didactic. The topics are reviewed in great detail so that this book can stand as a solid reference. It is extremely well illustrated and the references are extensive and current.
