Abstract
Abstract Compared to liposomal (Figure la) or, as they are commonly referred to, powder samples, highly aligned biomimetic membrane systems (Figure lb) offer a number of advantages. One of those advantages is the differentiation between out-of-plane (e.g., lamellar repeat spacing) and inplane (e.g., hydrocarbon chain organization) correlations [1,2]. Moreover, because the signal in aligned samples is not isotropic, and when a two-dimensional detector is unavailable, data collection is accelerated. Finally, the amount of material necessary to make aligned samples is generally a fraction of that needed for powder samples. This is an extremely important consideration as certain biological preparations (e.g., samples containing protein or peptides) are only available in minute quantities. Despite all of these advantages offered by aligned biomimetic systems, their use in neutron diffraction has been, for the most part, limited.
