Abstract
Résumé À l’âge de 33 ans, un employé d’une grande entreprise québécoise a fait un infarctus qui a failli lui coûter la vie. Cette épreuve l’a forcé à se rendre compte que son besoin excessif de reconnaissance l’amenait à travailler jusqu’à l’épuisement. Cet employé a rapidement gravi les échelons, mais c’était pour occuper des postes qui ne l’intéressaient pas. Son rêve était de devenir conférencier, formateur et coach en développement personnel et organisationnel. Or, il acceptait d’autres fonctions, croyant que cela lui attirerait la reconnaissance et le rapprocherait du poste convoité : « J’étais convaincu qu’à force de m’investir, de rendre service, de faire tout ce que je pouvais, je finirais par être reconnu et qu’on me libérerait afin que je puisse occuper le poste de mes rêves. » La dure expérience de la maladie lui a toutefois fourni une clé pour devenir heureux : « savoir ce que je veux et faire ce qu’il faut pour l’obtenir tout en acceptant sincèrement que cela se passe autrement, puis lâcher prise quant au résultat final ». Il a appris à prendre soin de lui-même et à ne plus avoir besoin de prouver sa valeur à qui que ce soit. Ce témoignage montre bien que si le désir de reconnaissance est normal, il ne doit pas être au détriment du bonheur dans le travail et la vie personnelle. Cet employé conclut : « Ce n’est pas seulement ce qui nous arrive qui détermine notre vie, mais ce que nous choisissons de faire avec ce qui nous arrive. » Voilà le message qu’il avait le goût de transmettre.
