Résumé : Dans cet article, nous montrons que les mots-outils jouent un rôle important dans les difficultés des sourds à l’écrit. Dans un premier temps, en nous basant sur différents corpus recueillis depuis une dizaine d’années, nous faisons une synthèse des observations liées aux erreurs de production des mots-outils par les sourds. Dans un deuxième temps, nous montrons que les mots-outils posent aussi des problèmes au niveau de la compréhension. Nous nous basons ici sur les résultats de tests de lecture recueillis à l’aide d’une technique d’autoprésentation par segments, qui fournit deux indices de compréhension : le temps de lecture et le nombre d’erreurs. Le nombre important d’erreurs sur les mots-outils pourrait s’expliquer par la distance entre la LSQ et le français, rendant difficile le transfert positif. Nous montrons que les erreurs produites par des adultes sourds en compréhension présentent des similarités avec celles des enfants entendants dont le français est la langue première. Nous proposerons d’expliquer ces similarités par l’existence de stades d’acquisition différenciés pour les mots pleins et pour les mots-outils. Nous conclurons en montrant qu’un modèle d’éducation bilingue est susceptible d’apporter une amélioration dans l’apprentissage des mots-outils par les enfants sourds.
