Abstract
AbstractTwo separate cases of death due to suicidal formaldehyde poisoning are reported. Formaldehyde is very rapidly metabolized to formic acid (formate). Formate concentrations were as follows: Case 1—blood 0.37, vitreous humor 0.12, urine 0.08; Case 2—blood 0.72, vitreous humor 0.57, urine 0.41 (all g/L). Methanol was also detected in all specimens, attributed to its presence as a stabilizer in commercial formaldehyde solutions. Formate was measured by headspace gas chromatography on an Rtx-BAC1 fused silica column (30 m × 0.53 mm ID, 3.0 μm film thickness, Restek #18001) after in situ methylation using methanol and concentrated sulfuric acid. The internal standard was diisopropyl ether.RÉSUMÉDeux différents cas de suicide par intoxication volontaire à la formaldéhyde sont présentés. La formaldéhyde est très rapidement métabolisée en acide formique. Les teneurs en acide formique retrouvées étaient les suivantes: Cas 1—sang 0,37 g/L—liquide oculaire 0,12 g/L—urine 0,08 g/L; Cas 2—sang 0,72 g/L—liquide oculaire 0,57 g/L—urine 0,41 g/L. L'alcool méthylique était également présent dans tous les échantillons puisque cet alcool agit comme agent stabilisateur dans les solutions commerciales de formaldéhyde. L'acide formique a été mesuré par chromatographie en phase gazeuse à pression de tête dynamique sur une colonne en silice fondue Rtx-BAC1 (30 m × 0,53 mm DI, épaisseur du film 3,0 μm, Restek # 18001) après méthylation in situ au méthanol et acide sulfurique concentré. Le standard interne utilisé était l'éther diisopropylique.
