Objetivo: Este articulo esta destinado a estimular el pensamiento critico ante las barreras y las estrategias relacionadas con la educacion sanitaria para poblaciones inmigrantes. Su fundamento es promover un conocimiento y la apreciacion de la individualidad y de la diversidad de las creencias, los valores y la cultura de los inmigrantes y como estos contribuyen a la educacion sanitaria a traves de la practica, la investigacion y la teoria de la enfermeria. Antecedentes: Desde 2005, mas de 1.250.000 inmigrantes por ano han obtenido la residencia permanente legal en Norteamerica (mas de un millon al ano en Estados Unidos de America (EE.UU.) y mas de 250.000 al ano en Canada). El problema: Si bien una amplia politica de inmigracion conduce al crecimiento demografico, al cambio cultural y a la diversidad etnica, la migracion afecta al estado de salud de los inmigrantes. En Norteamerica, el efecto del inmigrante sano, en el que los inmigrantes, en general, tienden a estar mas sanos que las personas nacidas en los paises de acogida, disminuye de manera constante despues de la inmigracion. Metodos: Las estadisticas de inmigracion e informes sobre conocimiento y aprendizaje procedieron de los sitios webs oficiales de Canada y de los EE.UU. Estos fueron revisados y debatidos en el contexto de la bibliografia cientifica publicada sobre conocimiento sanitario, educacion sanitaria y promocion sanitaria. Oportunidades: Promover la salud en la poblacion inmigrante es dificil debido al conocimiento sanitario, cultural, linguistico y a las barreras socioeconomicas. Sensibilidad cultural, una investigacion cuidadosa y un conocimiento integral de la situacion social de los inmigrantes son esenciales para todos los programas de educacion sanitaria. Conclusion: Las estrategias para la educacion sanitaria de los inmigrantes deben ser tecnologicamente diversas, implicar alianzas con profesionales multidisciplinares, provocar la participacion activa de la comunidad y facilitar la tranferencia e interpretacion del lenguaje. La futura investigacion debe seguir analizando estas barreras y estrategias, utilizando tanto metodos cualitativos como cuantitativos.
