Abstract
Voltaire et Wieland illustrent, chacun à sa façon, les problèmes engendrés par l’introduction de Shakespeare au sein d’un autre système culturel, et ce d’autant plus que certains passages de ses pièces passent souvent pour intraduisibles. Voltaire, le premier véritable connaisseur de Shakespeare dans l’Europe continentale, est convaincu du « génie sauvage » de l’auteur dramatique anglais. Mais pour Voltaire, contrairement à La Place et à Le Tourneur, la présence de Shakespeare sur la scène française, perçue comme culturellement supérieure à toutes les autres, ne peut en aucun cas être envisagée. Ses attaques plus tardives contre Shakespeare sont révélatrices des ambivalences de son attitude face à l’auteur dramatique anglais. Wieland, en revanche, n’éprouve pas de telles réserves : sa traduction partielle a pour objectif de familiariser ses contemporains avec le Théâtre de Shakespeare et d’enrichir le patrimoine culturel allemand. Là où Voltaire se contente de traduire (avec justesse) les obscénités d’Othello à des fins polémiques, Wieland fait preuve d’une grande fidélité au texte original qu’il transpose en entier.
