Abstract

Objective: Following menopause, women are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. The present study assessed haemodynamic changes following menopause, with a focus on systemic vascular resistance (SVR) at rest and during stress. Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine and cardiovascular adrenergic receptor (AR) function were also examined as potential mediators of haemodynamic changes. Method: A total of 94 women (N = 47 premenopausal; N=47 post-menopausal) completed a laboratory protocol comprised of a resting baseline and 4 mental stress tasks (anger interview, reaction-time shock-avoidance, mirror trace, and foot cold pressor). Heart rate, blood pressure (BP), cardiac output (CI) and systemic vascular resistance (SVRI), indexed for body surface area, were recorded each minute over the last three minutes of the resting baseline and during each minute of the 4 stress tasks. BP was measured utilizing an automatic auscultatory BP monitor. Impedance cardiography signals were recorded. To obtain plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine values, blood was sampled continuously from a cannula inserted into a forearm vein and connected by heparin-treated polyethylene tubing to a blood withdrawal pump. Measurements were averaged to yield baseline and task values. Cardiovascular AR function was assessed in a separate session using infusions of isoproterenol and phenylephrine.
