Abstract
Abstract. The mechanical alloying behavior of magnesium with some transition and non-transition elements has been investigated. The structural changes during mechanical alloying were monitored by X-ray diffraction analysis. Mechanical alloying of Mg with transition metals V or Nb does not form alloys, and the solubilities of V and Nb in hcp-Mg are negligibly small after long time of ball milling. The solubility of Mn in Mg is extended to 0.7 at. % Mn by intensive ball milling. Mechanical alloying of Mg with Ti and Zr results in an extended solubility of Ti and Zr in Mg, due to the favorable size factor and their isomorphous structure. Mechanical alloying of Mg with Cd, Li, In, Al, Y, Zn, Ga leads to the formation of hcp Mg solid solutions containing these elements up to 20, 10, 10, 5.5, 5.5, 2.5 and 2 at. % respectively. In the case of ball milling Mg with Ni, Sn, Pb, the equilibrium intermetallic compounds of Mg with these elements are obtained. The formation of equilibrium intermetallic phases suppresses the solubility of these elements in Mg, and the solubility extensions are close to zero. A full solid solution of Ag in hcp-Mg forms after 25 hours of mechanical alloying of the Mg-5 at. % Ag. However, prolonged milling to 40 hours leads to the precipitation of a Mg3Ag phase and a concomitant decrease in the solubility of Ag in hcp-Mg phase. 1.
