Les avancées du chantier des “prénoms révolutionnaires, depuis une vingtaine d’années, autorisent un premier bilan historiographique et méthodologique de l’état de la question. Après l’étape des “pionniers (jusque 1980), une prise de conscience manifeste des enjeux et des pièges permet d’affiner les analyses. Des accords deviennent possibles quant à la caractérisation du phénomène, son inscription dans une séquence chronologique brève (ramassée autour de l’an II), à replacer dans des évolutions de plus longue durée. Des corpus trop différents de “prénoms révolutionnaires peuvent être rapprochés par la prise en compte systématique de critères communs le sexe, la situation des enfants, voire le contexte des actes. Il reste à trouver un accord sur des catégories encore mouvantes prénoms sûrs (Montagne), prénoms ambigus (Rose, Victoire), prénoms mixtes (Jean Liberté). Si la plupart des auteurs s’accordent sur l’importance du “test des “prénoms révolutionnaires, ils divergent sur sa signification, en termes de ruptures (religieuse, politique, culturelle) ou d’absence de rupture (mode, contrainte). La multiplication de travaux fiables, à partir de bases et de grilles communes, devrait permettre de franchir une nouvelle étape, celle d’une enquête nationale dans un domaine particulièrement fécond.
