Rassemblant plus de 350 références françaises, mais aussi anglaises et allemandes, cette bibliographie thématique retrace deux cents ans d’histoire éditoriale et d’étude historique sur les quatre premiers mois de l’année 1814 en France. L’invasion des Alliés sur le sol national et l’effondrement du régime impérial suscitèrent une abondante activité éditoriale. Face à ce bouleversement politique européen, les contemporains tentèrent, à travers mémoires, récits, pamphlets, de comprendre ou de justifier ce qui était encore impensable quelques mois plus tôt. Les travaux historiques se nourriront de ces témoignages et puiseront des documents inédits dans les archives pour décrire les batailles et les combats. L’intitulé « campagne de France » est le plus souvent utilisé au singulier tant il est vrai que ce sont les batailles menées par Napoléon Ier dans le nord-est qui focalisent l’intérêt de la plupart des historiens français. Il est cependant plus juste de parler de campagnes au pluriel, même si la prise en tenaille de la France par les troupes européennes (passages des Pyrénées, des Alpes, de la Belgique) n’a pas fait l’objet d’autant d’attention mémorielle.
