Abstract
Tertiary fluvial and Quaternary glacial paleo‐channels with no current topographic expression are common phenomena in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). These channels are infilled by fluvial sediment of Cordilleran and local origin, and/or glacial drift of Continental (Laurentide) and local origin. As part of a study of the magnetic character of buried channels, magnetic susceptibility measurements were taken from regional cores of glacial till. The resulting data indicate that these sediments have higher susceptibility values than the underlying bedrock. Whereas tills have susceptibility ranges from 0.2–0.8 ×10−3 SI units, sedimentary bedrock from the WCSB range between 0.05–0.4 ×10−3 SI units. It appears that the elevated susceptibility values in tills comes primarily from Canadian Shield‐derived igneous and metamorphic rock material. Differences in average magnetic susceptibilities of separate till units likely reflects compositional variations within the tills relating to different periods of glaciation and different iceflow trajectories. Mineralogical and magnetic susceptibility investigations are currently underway in the Kiskatinaw Creek, British Columbia, buried channel section to resolve the various magnetic constituents within different types of glacial drift, Tertiary fluvial deposits, and underlying bedrock.
